Menkes Developments (a major property manager) reported that in a recent 6-month period, it screened 175 rental applicants and over 90 were disqualified for fraud or “discrepancies”. The pair (allegedly sisters) provided falsified IDs, job references, and credit reports to secure the lease, which looked “stellar” on paper. Once in, they paid no rent for 7 months – and even blocked the landlord from inspecting the unit….
Amid huge tribunal delays, some tenants are demanding massive payouts to move out, knowing eviction can’t happen quickly. According to paralegal Bita Di Lisi, “We have some tenants who ask for over $100,000. Some tenants are asking for the landlord to buy a plot of land for them” in exchange for . This “cash-for-keys” trend sees desperate landlords paying tens of thousands as unofficial buyouts, rather than endure months of lost rent during formal evictions
